On Friday, September 19th from 2 to 3:30 PM CT, the Child Health Corporation
of America (CHCA) coordinated a webcast by the Children's Hospital of
Orange County (CHOC), entitled “One Hospital's Journey toward the
Baldrige National Quality Award.” The archived Webcast is available
on-demand by clicking here
<link to Webcast>; registration is required for access.
Kimberly Cripe, Chief Executive Officer,
and Beth Rowett, Director of Quality, at CHOC presented why the hospital
began the Baldrige journey, how the application process was managed,
lesson learns from their experience, and their next steps in achieving
performance excellence. They also answered questions from other CHCA
members and provided advice to any hospitals that are considering the use
of the Baldrige Criteria in their performance improvement programs.
Jim
Shaw of Shaw Resources and Wayne
New of New Consulting Services assisted CHOC in their initial 2007
preparation of the California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE)
application, which received the Bronze quality award from CAPE. As part of
the services provided for CHOC’s first award process, Jim and Wayne
assisted with developing their application and facilitated the orientation
and preparation of board members, executives, medical staff leaders, and
staff for the initial site visit by CAPE examiners. Recently, they
provided support for the CHOC's 2008 application, using the 2007 feedback
report that helped guide CHOC executives in their operational improvement
efforts. It is anticipated that CHOC’s s 2008 application will receive
greater CAPE recognition.

“When
our hospital committed to the Baldrige journey, we knew that we needed
additional resources and support from experts. The guidance and assistance
provided by Jim and Wayne was key to conducting our assessment and site
visit more effectively and in far less time than we could have
accomplished on our own.”
