Background

The Criteria for Performance Excellence is a strategic framework

that links processes with objectives and action plans to drive key results.  It is maintained by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and is used by an increasing number of business executives to assess their organization’s performance.

It is a publicly available framework that enables executives to quickly identify Opportunities for Improvement and decide upon appropriate approaches to improve.  Since it is non prescriptive, NIST uses

the Criteria to annually select winners of its Malcolm

Baldrige National Quality Award.

All improvement methodologies are acceptable under the Criteria including the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology, DMAIC/Six Sigma, LEAN, ISO, Theory of Constraints, and all accreditation mandated practices.

June 9, 2010: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced that it received 83 applications for the 2010 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Applicants include three manufacturers, two service companies, seven small businesses, 10 educational organizations, 54 health care organizations and seven nonprofit/governmental organizations. The 2010 winners of the Baldrige Award are expected to be announced in late November 2010.

Editor’s note: Recently, Congress amended the law to enable nonprofit and government organizations to apply.  In 2007, the City of Coral Springs, FL, was named the first local government entity to win a Baldirge award..

Baldrige Named a “Best Leadership” Program

Government/military organizational leaders

For the third straight year, Leadership Excellence magazine has named the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program at NIST to its list of the “top 10 leadership development (LD) programs” among U.S. government/military organizations.

Leadership Excellence was founded in 1984 by management experts Ken Shelton, Stephen R. Covey, Ken Blanchard and Charles Garfield. The magazine chooses its top leadership development programs from more than 1,000 candidate organizations based on seven criteria: vision/mission; involvement and participation; measurement and accountability; curriculum; presenters, presentations and delivery; take-home value; and outreach.
