Method to improve business quality wins
patent
Appeals Court ruling opens the door for
different types of inventions.
Cupertino, California, August 8, 2000 --
U.S. patent number 6101479 has been awarded to Shaw Resources, a Silicon
Valley-based consulting firm, for an innovative business method that can
be used to improve an organization’s quality.
The Shaw patent is one of the first of its
type issued since a federal appeals-court recently ruled that software and
business methods are inventions that could qualify for patent protection.
Called Customer-Inspired Process Deployment®,
Shaw’s newly-patented methodology shows how to improve the processes in
an organization that are used by customers to judge product and service
quality. Shaw’s CPD® methodology provides templates for
gathering data and making changes in the organization that result in
improved quality, better customer satisfaction, and more overall
efficiency.“
Quality is what customers say it is,”
said Jim Shaw, president of Shaw Resources. “It is difficult for an
organization to view itself from the customer’s perspective and pin down
what expectations customers have. The CPD® methodology
precisely defines and quantifies customer expectations and converts them
into performance standards that can be continuously measured and improved.”
Shaw Resources has used the CPD®
methodology to achieve specific results such as assuring speedier service
to hospital patients, reducing the amount of accounts receivables in
manufacturing firms, helping residential development firms cut costs on
building new homes, and decreasing the number of customer complaints
lodged with any business.
Shaw filed for the patent in 1992, shortly
after he developed his unique approach to quality improvement. During the
nearly eight-year patent review procedure, Shaw wrote a book about his key
elements of the CPD® methodology (“Looking Backward Through
the Telescope: Customer-Inspired® Quality”, published by Jossey-Bass in
1996), and created an interactive software product, Process Advisor™, as
a CPD® tool.“
Our clients have licensed the
Customer-Inspired Process Deployment® methodology on a nondisclosure
basis, but the patent means that we can make it available to the broader
marketplace,” said Shaw. The firm plans to sell CPD®
methodology licenses to a wide range of companies and industries.
“One of the distinctive features of the
CPD® methodology is its flexibility and adaptability to all
types of organizations,” said Shaw. “I think that’s the hallmark of
a good invention - that it can be applied in many different ways.”
